We chatted to our Doctoral graduate, Elizabeth Raney, who completed our PhD in Cultural Art History. Her mentor was Dr Jill Kiefer.
Where do you live now and what do you do?
I live in Los Angeles and work at MOCA (The Museum of Contemporary Art).
Why did you choose this career?
I want to share my knowledge of art with the community and working at a museum gives me the opportunity to educate the public.
What did you enjoy about your Warnborough experience?
The challenge of writing a dissertation, and the reading and extensive education I got working towards this goal.
In what way has this experience has been beneficial to you?
We all have different chapters in our lives – childhood, education, parenting, travel, love… this chapter enabled me to focus deeply in the field of art.
Why did you choose distance learning?
I am a single mother of 2 and needed to be home to raise my girls.
What are some of the challenges of studying at a distance?
My mentor Jill was very available to me for questions and advice so I did not feel that distance learning was difficult.
What’s next for you?
I will continue working at MOCA. Also, I am looking into a part time job as a fine arts specialist in insurance claims.
What is your favorite quote?
“Life is a shipwreck, but don’t forget to sing in the lifeboats” – Voltaire.
If you could have dinner with any three people, who would they be and why?
The Dalai Lama, Socrates, Margaret Thatcher…. Compassion, philosophy, politics…. that would make for an interesting dinner!
What advice would you give to your younger self?
“Enjoy each chapter in life and don’t worry” is what I would tell my younger self.
Describe Warnborough in five words.
Challenging, helpful, supportive, abroad, great advisor.
