Warnborough Vice-President, Dr Julian Ng, spent some time with Dr Vicki Ann Cremona, the Chair of the School of Performing Arts at the University of Malta.
They talked about a range of topics, but when it came to the arts in education, Dr Cremona had some very interesting ideas. These are encapsulated in an interview which was recorded.
Children should be taught to create… not just use templates created by others.
Dr Vicki Ann Cremona, University of Malta
Among issues that were discussed:
- What can arts educators do to change the narrative that the sciences should have more priority over the arts?
- Is there an argument for incorporating the arts into the curriculum, even for science students?
- How can we encourage today’s youth to go into the arts?
- What role can the government do to foster the arts in education?
These are typical questions that arts educators and policymakers agonise over, daily.
